About | Virginian-Pilot, The (Norfolk, VA) - Friday, February 8, 2008 VIRGINIA BEACH - John Thomas Shelby, 75, passed away Feb. 4, 2008, peacefully at home. He was born Oct. 13, 1932, to the late Frank and Thelma Shelby in Piketon, Ohio. He was a graduate of Piketon High School. John retired as a chief shipfitter from the U.S. Navy after 22 years of service. He continued his career as a pipe fitter with civil service at the Navy Public Works Center, Norfolk, and retired after 20 years. John was a member of St. Timothy Lutheran Church. He was a Master Mason of the Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons of Ohio Orient Lodge 321, Waverly, Ohio. He was also active in the Fleet Reserve Association, Branch 99, and the American Legion, Post 141. John and his wife enjoyed time at their Kill Devil Hills residence as well as time spent in Virginia Beach. He was a loving and devoted husband and father and will be greatly missed. Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 47 years, Margaret Marion Hanson Shelby; and sons, Franklin M. Shelby and wife Paula and Thomas E. Shelby and wife Lori. A celebration of life will be held at 7 p.m. today in St. Timothy Lutheran Church officiated by the Rev. John Heins. Burial will be at a later date in Ohio.
