About | John Thomas Shelby of Virginia Beach, Va., 75, passed away Feb. 4, 2008, peacefully at home. He was born Oct. 13, 1932, to the late Frank and Thelma McCormick Shelby in Piketon, Ohio. He was a graduate of Piketon High School. John retired as a chief shipfitter from the U.S. Navy after 22 years of service. He continued his career as a pipefitter with the civil service at the Navy Public Works Center in Norfolk, and retired after 20 years. John was a member of St. Timothy Lutheran Church in Norfolk. He was a Master Mason of the Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons, and a member of Orient Lodge 321 F&AM of Waverly, Ohio. He was active in the Fleet Reserve Association, Branch 99 and the American Legion Post 141. He was a loving and devoted husband and father, and will be greatly missed. Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 47 years, Margaret Marion Hanson Shelby; and sons, Franklin M. Shelby, and wife, Paula, and Thomas E. Shelby, and wife, Lori. A Celebration of Life will take place at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 16, 2008, at Howe-Wheeler-Boyer-Hornback Funeral Home in Piketon, Ohio, with Pastor Todd Wallace officiating. Burial will follow in Tranquility Cemetery in Seaman, Ohio. Masonic services will begin at 1:45 p.m., preceding the Celebration of Life. Graveside military services will be conducted by Adams County Honor Guard. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to a hospice organization or a charity of one Portsmouth Daily Times |
