About | Juanita Cutler Rice, 90, passed on April 24, 2001, at the Hospice Care Center. She was born in Jasper, Ohio, to Newell and Grayce Shoemaker Cutler. She was predeceased by her husband, Hugh Rice, in 1982; her beloved son, Hugh O'Neill Rice, in 1996; her parents; brothers, George, Myron, Obed, Glen, Calvin, and Joseph Cutler; sisters, Lourea Diddle, Frances Cutler, and Kathryn Tomlin; and special nephew, Harold Jay Cutler. She is survived by many loving nieces and nephews, especially Janie Berntholdt, Lori Berning, David Diddle, Walter Ferrell, Glen and Terry Cutler, Kathy Sloter, Cathy Rice Mossing, and Patty Jean Yancey. Her special caregivers were Penny and Kenny Roush, Laura and Murrel Johnson, and Hank and Judy Richard. Juanita graduated from Piketon High School in 1928 and came to Akron in 1929 to work for the Firestone Tire & Rubber Co. in the print shop. She was recruited to play in the Women's Industrial Basketball League. The women played the prelimenary game before the Firestone Non Skids. She played until her marriage to Hugh Rice in 1939. She loved penny bingo with her many friends at the Ellet, Springfield, Firestone Park, and St. Paul Senior Citizens. She was a member of Hoban Mother's Club and the St. Paul's Ladies Guild. She also served as a Cub Scout den mother. Visitation will be 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Thursday, April 26, 2001, at the Dunn-Quigley, Ciriello & Carr Funeral Home, 811 Grant St., Akron. Funeral Mass will be held at the church at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations are requested to the St. Paul Church Building Fund, 433 Mission Dr., Akron, Ohio 44301.
