About Kathryn V. Dunham was born on June 14, 1922, to John Robert and Ruth Hill Vulgamore in Piketon, Ohio and died on Friday, October 1, 2010 at Knox Community Hospital.

She is survived by four children, Jon (Debra) and Luanne of Mount Vernon, James (Ree) of Gambier, Dan (Buffy) of Three Oaks, Michigan and two step grandsons, Joel and Jeremy. She was pre-deceased by her husband, Harold F. Dunham, in 1984, her parents, and her sister, Marylou Hoffman.

She was a graduate of Piketon High School and Miami University and did graduate study at Ohio State, Purdue, and Ohio Universities. She taught at Western High School, Latham, Danville High School, and twenty-eight years at Mount Vernon High School where she also advised the literary magazine, Vedette, and was chairman of the English Department.

She was a member of the Gay Street United Methodist Church, Delta Kappa Gamma, the Sorosis Club, and the Ohio Council of Teachers of English/Language Arts. She was a past-president of the Piketon Sorosis Club, the Mount Vernon Sorosis Club, the Mount Vernon Education Association, and O.C.T.E.L.A. She served a three-year term as Ohio co-ordinator of the Achievement Awards in Writing for the National Council of Teachers of English and ten years as one of three judges of the Lucille Loy Kuch Awards in Writing for the Ohioana Library.

Calling hours will be on Tuesday, October 5, 2010 from 5-7 p.m. at the Flowers-Snyder Funeral Home, 619 East High St., Mount Vernon with Delta Kappa Gamma Sorority service to follow.

The funeral service will be at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, October 6, 2010 at the Gay Street United Methodist Church, 18 North Gay St, Mount Vernon. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will follow in Mound View Cemetery.
