About Lois Jean Douglass Conrad, RN, 99, died peacefully in her sleep at her home in Dallas, NC on May 30, 2011. Lois was born December 1, 1911, in Camden, WV to Art Carson Douglass and Rose Etta Gum Douglass who preceded her in death. Lois was a mother, a nurse, and a steadfast friend to her family and her many neighbors whom she loved dearly. She graduated in 1929 from Piketon (Ohio) High School and spent much of her young adulthood in Waverly, OH. A child of Appalachia, she lived longer than all of her seven siblings and their spouses. Lois graduated from Mount Carmel College of Nursing in Columbus. She began her career as an industrial nurse for the Mead paper mill in Chillicothe during the depression. She also nursed in Columbus and Cincinnati, retiring in 1973 as the Supervisor of Nursing for the Orthodox Jewish Home for the Aged in Cincinnati. In 1948 in Waverly, OH, she married her beloved husband of 60 years, William F. Conrad Jr., MCPO, USN, of Louisville, KY, who preceded her in death in 2009. Together they raised two children in Gahanna and Cincinnati, Pamela Jean Conrad of Columbus and Ann Arbor, MI, and William F. Conrad III of Dallas, NC. In addition to William and Pamela, Lois is survived by the following Ohioans: nieces and nephews, James P. Mitchell and wife, Nancy of Granville, Robert B. Schmitt, Jr., DDS and wife, Judy of Waverly, and Karen Schmitt Eachus of Jackson. She is also survived by five grand-children, eight great-grandchildren, and a total of 14 nieces and nephews and their spouses and children. In addition to being a loving wife and mother, Lois was a talented at crochet and her signature 'bar towels' will help hundreds of friends remember her. She also was an excellent cook, and her family still prizes her potato soup recipe. Lois was born December 1, 1911, in Camden WV to the late Art Carson Douglass and the late Rose Etta Gum Douglass of Waverly. Lois was a mother, a nurse, and a steadfast friend to her family and her neighbors, who loved her dearly.

Raised in Shyville, she graduated in 1929 from Piketon High School where she played along with her sisters on the girls' basketball team. She spent much of her young adulthood in Waverly. A child of Appalachia, she survived all of her seven siblings and their spouses, including Waverly residents Lester (Douglass) Campbell, Mariam (Douglass) McCullough, Howard Douglass, and Geneva (Douglass) Schmitt and her husband Robert B. Schmitt Sr.

Lois graduated from Mount Carmel College of Nursing in Columbus. She began her career as an industrial nurse for the Mead paper mill in Chillicothe during the depression. She also nursed in Columbus and Cincinnati, retiring in 1973.
