About | Phyllis June Schooley August 24, 1937~April 5, 2011 Former Bay Area Resident Loving Wife, Mother, Grandmother, Aunt, Neighbor and Friend As the clouds rolled in and the rain fell, Phyllis June Schooley passed away peacefully at the Kona Hospital in Kealakekua, Hawaii on April 5, 2011. Her husband, a grandchild, all of her four children, and many friends were with her in her final days. She was born in Clovis, New Mexico, to Noel and Gladys (Lusk) Henley. She lived in Kentucky and Ohio, graduating from Piketon High School in 1955. She attended Whittier College and during a summer job as a counselor at Camp Deer Ridge Girl Scout Camp, she met the handyman, Bob Schooley. They were married on March 8, 1957, and moved to up to Berkeley where Bob earned his Ph.D. As a professor's wife she was busy raising five children, and being the PTA president and girl scout leader. She finished her education at the University of San Francisco in Sociology, and was a social worker for 37 years for both Alameda and Contra Costa counties working on projects for young mothers, the elderly, and in job retraining. Bob and Phyl retired to Kona. She loved classic black-and-white films, Elizabeth Peters mysteries, black licorice, and jazz music. She taught her children compassion and tolerance, and she had a riotous sense of humor. She is survived by her husband Robert Alexander Schooley; daughters Laura Schooley of Hercules, Kathleen Carlsen of Santa Rosa, and Marcia (spouse Kent) Hakanson of Portola Valley; and son John (spouse Liz Echols) Schooley of Martinez. She is predeceased by daughter Nancy, who died of leukemia in 1971. She has 6 grandchildren Heidi Brown, Heather Schooley Johansson, Erik Carlsen, Haley Schooley Robinson, Kari Carlsen, and Alexander Hakanson. Kailani (Kiki) was her first great-grandchild, with another great-grandchild on the way. Memorial Services will be held at a later date. Contra Costa Times on April 17, 2011 |
