About | Richard Leon Matthews, 77, of Piketon, OH and formerly of Hillsboro, died Wednesday, February 16, 2005 at the home of his sister. He was born November 2, 1927 in Idaho, OH the son of the late Raymond W. and Edith A. (Legg) Matthews. Mr. Matthews had retired as the safety engineer for Martin Marietta Energy Systems and had served both Highland and Pike Counties as a Special Sheriff Deputy. He was a Korean War veteran serving in the U.S. Air Force and a 1945 graduate of Piketon High School. He was a member of the Rainsboro United Methodist Church, a life member of the Hillsboro VFW Post 9094, a member of the Bainbridge American Legion Post 14, Highland Lodge 38 F & AM and the Scottish Rite Valley of Cincinnati. He is survived by two daughters and a son-in-law: Kandy and Paul Barrett of Rainsboro, and Kristy L. Matthews of Cocoa Beach, FL; 3 sons and daughters-in-law: Rick and Cindy Matthews of Rainsboro, Dr. Rindy and Candy Matthews of Leesburg, Rorky and Susie Matthews of Westerville, 11 grandchildren, Josh and his wife Erin Matthews of Rainsboro, Tara Matthews of Gallipolis, Jenny and her husband Nathan Brown of Hillsboro, Samantha Matthews of Rainsboro, Roman Matthews of Davenport, IA, Rocky Matthews of Moberly, Missouri, Ryan Matthews of Leesburg, Walter Matthews of Westerville, George Matthews of Westerville, Brandon Barrett of Rainsboro, Jonathon Barrett of Rainsboro, one great granddaughter: Grace Matthews of Rainsboro, three sisters and four brothers-in-law: Wilma and Jack Weeter of Waverly, Rosetta and Paul Minor of Lady Lake, FL, Connie and Carl Yeager of Waverly, Earl McCallister of Piketon; two brothers: and sisters-in-law: Arnold and Jane Matthews of Lucasville, and George and Suzanne Matthews of Piketon. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife: Kathryn “Katie” Matthews on January 11, 1994, a daughter: Kathy Matthews; a son: Randy Matthews; and a sister: Ruth McCallister. Funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m. Monday, February 21, 2005 at the Boyer Funeral Home in Waverly with Rev. Janie Shoemaker and Rev. Grover Blankenship officiating. Burial will follow with military honors presented by the Highland County Honor Guard, in the Mound Cemetery, Piketon. Friends may call from 4-7 p.m. on Saturday at the Turner & Son Funeral Home in Hillsboro where Masonic services and Scottish Rite Ring services will be held at 6:45 p.m. Friends may also call from 3-6 p.m. on Sunday and from 9 a.m. until the time of the service on Monday at the Boyer Funeral Home in Waverly.
