Jacklyn K. (hughes) Salisberry Obituary

Graduation Year Class of 1969
Date of Passing Dec 26, 2021
About Jacklyn K. Salisberry, 70, died Sunday, December 26, 2021, in Wilmington, N.C. A native of Shreve and 1969 graduate of Triway High School, Jac was an old hippie, and in that spirit took love and peace to the next level. She had a heart of gold and a bright soul that radiated kindness, patience, selflessness, unconditional love, and grace. She never met a stranger and had a gift for looking past people’s shortcomings in a way that was angelic.

Jac’s greatest joys in her final season were her grandchildren, children, husband, sidekick Kaylee Sue, celebrating holidays, hanging with her bestie, long phone conversations with out-of-state family and friends, sending heart-felt messages and memes, going to the dog park, and spending time around the water, at Wrightsville Beach, poolside, or at water aerobics.

Throughout her lifetime, she worked incredibly hard as a small business owner and in housekeeping management at hotels in Wooster, Strongsville, Cleveland, and Canton. Regardless of late nights and daily commutes, she was a dedicated wife and mother. You could always find her cheerleading, cowbell ringing, split recording, picture taking, card sending, and ornament hunting. When she became “Grammy”, her focus included pouring into her grandchildren in every way she could. To say she was amazing is an understatement.

In addition to family, she loved Christmas, honoring family traditions, smoking cigarettes while drinking coffee and shooting the “breeze”, singing, karaoke, a glass of ice-cold milk, warm soaks, iced chai, heat lightning, the smell of lilacs, freshly mowed grass and campfires, watching and discussing Ohio sports, cotton candy, meat and potatoes, Filet-O-Fish sandwiches, mayonnaise by the spoonful, sharing stories of her youth, summer trips to Canada, sunbathing, and something that all who knew her will remember: boisterous belly-laughing.

Despite spending years fighting quietly, courageously, and stubbornly through pain and illness, preferring to preserve her dignity over complaining and refusing to be a burden to others, she worried constantly about those she loved. We can honor Jac by letting her know, in our own way, that we’ll be alright and by viewing her life as an example for us all (1 Corinthians 13: 4-8). Oh, and if you see a Cardinal and feel her presence, know she’s checking in on you.

Jac is survived by her husband of 49 years, Edward Salisberry, and constant companion, rescued boxer Kaylee; her son and daughter-in-law Adam and Anita Salisberry, of Shreve; daughter and son-in-law Jana and John Clancey, of Wilmington, N.C.; her greatest joys, grandchildren Kaden Salisberry, and Will, Darby and Maeve Clancey; brother and sister-in-law Jerry and Tina Hughes, of Reno, NV; brother and sister-in-law Brett and Paula Hughes, of Shreve; cousin and “sister” Melinda “Punk” Hornyak and family of Mansfield; cousins Debbie Carmichael-Crump, of MI, and Keely Zemrock, of Wooster, and their families; special nephews and niece, Jason Hughes, of AK, Jed and Josie Hughes, of Shreve, and Heather Bray, of NV; and a host of close relatives and friends.

Jac was preceded in death by many family members and friends, about whom she frequently reminisced, but most notably: her parents, William “Wild Bill” and Patricia “Patty Rose” Hughes, nephew Luke Hughes, beloved relatives Dot and Bub Cayhoe and Zoe Carmichael, and lifelong friend, Brenda Gray.

An oceanside celebration of life occurred Saturday, January 1, 2022, at Public Access 2, Wrightsville Beach, N.C. A second celebration will be held in Ohio at a later date.
