About | JAMES EDWARD WILKINS, 87, of Springfield passed away Sunday, December 9, 2012 in the Springfield Regional Medical Center. He was born January 23, 1925 in Urbana, Ohio, the son of the late Wren C. and Gladys (Mauck) Wilkins. He graduated from Urbana, Ohio High School in 1943 and following World War II he graduated 1949 from Wittenberg University with a degree in Business Administration. He was among one of the first veterans from World War II to go to school on the G.I. Bill at Wittenberg. During the war he served in the 7th Army, Third Infantry (Old Guard Unit) Military occupation, European Theater, he was a Squad Sergeant and radio repairman. He trained at Fort Bragg, North Carolina and Fort Benning, Georgia and arrived in Germany in 1945, stayed at Babenhauser, there he was in charge of a unit that guarded German prisoners. He was member of Good Shepherd Evangelical Lutheran Church in Springfield, Ohio where he was a member of the Singing Shepherd's choir for many years. He also served in various areas of the church activities. He was a member of the Champaign County Masonic Lodge F and AM and the Council and Chapter of Masonry and was a past Worshipful Master. He was a member Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity at Wittenberg University where he served as president. He was a former member of the Ohio Banker Association and retired from Society Bank (now Key Bank). He was also an income tax preparer and Notary Public. He was a member of the Honor Flight group and went to Washington D.C. to visit the World War II monument. His hobbies were gardening and working on his pine trees at his farm outside of Urbana, Ohio. |
