About HAYDEN--Lawrence R.S., 86 years old on October 13th. Larry, as he was known to his loving wife Laurie, and his friends and family, or Mr. Hayden, as he was known to the thousands of students he taught, first at Wooster College, and then at Poly Prep Country Day School, where he taught for 35 years, was born on May 5th, 1925. A decorated combat veteran of WWII, he graduated from Wooster College, did his graduate work at Columbia University, and then taught English at Wooster College. He then taught at The Gow School in South Wales, NY before moving to Brooklyn, NY to teach 11th grade English at Poly. As his many students through the years can attest, he taught them more than just English, but lessons that have served them in life as well. He was an expert on a myriad of topics, ranging from English Literature, to the Duke of Wellington, to the professional sports teams of Cleveland, and The Ohio State University football team. He is survived by his adoring wife Laurie, his son Jim, his sister Barbara, his daughter-in-law Kathie, and his grandson Jamal. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in his name to: The Nature Conservancy/Long Island Chapter, 250 Lawrence Hill Road, Cold Spring Harbor, NY 11724.
