About | Betty Lee Mathews Hooper, 89, of Zanesville, died Friday, July 9, 2010 at Genesis Good Samaritan Hospital Emergency Room. She was born May 13, 1921 in Athens, Ohio, a daughter of the late Harry H. and Muriel Graft Mathews. She graduated in 1939 from Zanesville High School, then graduated from Meredith Business College in 1940. Betty worked for the WPA as a bookkeeper, and during the War she worked as an Inspector for the Hoover Company. Betty later was the personal secretary for Earl Jones of the Jones Coal Company, then went to work as a bookkeeper for the Jones Gift Shop. Betty retired from the Bookstall where she worked for Betty Daw. She was an active member of Market Street Baptist Church, was a member of the Crusaders Class, served as Chairman of the Board of Directors for the YWCA, past president of Junior Women's Club, member of Women's Republican Club, served on the Board of Directors at Eastside Community Ministries and a 60 year member of the Order of Eastern Star # 251. Surviving is her husband of 69 years, James R. Hooper, of the home, whom she married August 30, 1941; a son, Judge Jeff (Amy) Hooper of Zanesville; a daughter, Penny Duffee of Bloomington, IL; three grandchildren, Christa (Steve) Staryak of North Carolina, Katie (Scott) Hooper-Boyd of Martins Ferry, and Adam Hooper of Centerville; two great grandchildren, Sydney Staryak and Jack Hooper Boyd. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by a son-in-law, William Duffee. The family will receive friends from 2-4 & 6-8 p.m. Monday, July 12, 2010 at Bolin-Dierkes Funeral Home, 1271 Blue Avenue, Zanesville and also one hour prior to services at the church. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, July 13, 2010 at Market Street Baptist Church, 140 North 6th Street, Zanesville with Dr. David Brown officiating. Burial will follow at Zanesville Memorial Park. |
