About | SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - Charles Richard Adams, 72, the first black probation officer in Western Massachusetts, died Friday, October 12, 2001 at his home. He was born in Zanesville on March 19, 1929, to the late George H. and Thelma L. (Barnett) Adams. He earned his bachelor's degree from Ohio University. He lived in the Springfield, Mass., area since 1958. He was a US Arny veteran. He was employed in the Hampden County District Court System for 33 years, retiring in 1999 as an assistant clerk magistrate. He was a member of St. John's congregational Church, where he was a lay church member and a member of the choir. He was a member of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity. He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife Adele D. (Pickens) Adams of Springield, Mass.; two sons, Richard W. and Bruce H. both of Springield, Mass.; two sisters, Jane Sweed of Columbus and Ruth Ann Burley of Zanesville; an aunt Blanche Walker of Zanesville; a daughter-in-law Sharen A. Adams of Springfield, Mass.; several nieces and nephews and many other loving relatives and friends. Funeral services were held last week in Springfield. |
