About David H. Crossland of Boggs Rd., veteran Zanesville attorney, died at 7:30 am Thursday, February 26, 1970 at Bethesda Hospital where he had been a patient for the past month. He was 68,

Mr. Crossland, brother of Clarence J. Crossland, retired Muskingum County Common Pleas Judge, was a member of the Board of Trustees at Bethesda Hospital for some 25 years and at the time of his death was secretary of the board.

He was active in civic and community affairs, having served as a director of the Red Cross Chapter here for 10 years and was its chairman from 1943 until 1945. He was chairman of the former Fletcher General Hospital (Cambridge) Camp and Hospital Council, coordinating 18 chapters’ services to that hospital from 1943 to 1945.

Mr. Crossland also was past chairman of the Red Cross Central Buckeye Council of 16 Chapters serving Chillicothe Veterans Hospital and Lockbourne Air Force Base Hospital.

From 1940 to 1945 he served as a member of Selective Service Board No. 1 in Muskingum county. He sponsored and presided at organization meetings of the Social Planning Council here and was one of the founders of the University Club.

At one time he served as Boy Scout Commissioner in the Zane Trace Area and supervised a troop at Grace United Methodist church in the 1920’s

Mr. Crossland was a 1919 graduate of Zanesville High School and the College of commerce at The Ohio State University where he received his degree in 1923. He was employed at the old Hazel Atlas Glass Co. plant at the foot of Market St. and later at Anchor Hocking Glass Co. in Lancaster.

While working at the Lancaster plant he attended night law school at Franklin University, Columbus, graduating in June 1937. He opened a law office here in October of that year, and for a shor time in the 1950’s was associated in his practice with Attorney Francis Burkhart.

Mr Crossland was a past president of the Muskingum County Bas Association which will hold a memorial service at 10am today in Common Pleas court room.

He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, a charter member of Honor Masonic Lodge and was long recognized as a conservationist in this area. He was an avid fisherman and at one time was active in the affairs of the Muskingum Valley Fishermen’s association

A native of Zanesville, he was born July 20, 1901, a son of Dr. Jefferson C. and Elizabeth Ann Harris Crossland.

His wife, the former Dorothy Nelson, died in October 1968, and he was also preceded in death by a brother, William and a sister, Florence.

Surviving in addition to his brother, who resides at 2775 Martin Road, are a son, Peter Nelson Crossland of Akron, Doctor of Phiosophy and faculty member in the department of political science at Kent State University and two grandsons, David, 5, and Andrew, 3.

Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery.
