| About | Donald "Don" B. Schmid, 80 of Zanesville passed at 7:16 PM Tuesday, September 24, 2024 at Genesis Healthcare following a short illness. He was born December 22, 1943 in Zanesville, Ohio the son of Karl David Schmid and Lillian Louise Margaret Thress Schmid. Don was a member of Westwood Baptist Church and was a Veteran of the U.S. Army. He retired from Armco Steel after 30 years. After retirement, Don worked part time for Ray Thomas. He was a man of quiet strength. He and his beloved wife Joyce (“Annie”) of 56 years, daily lived their faith in Jesus Christ providing loving guidance and examples for their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. He loved his church family and enjoyed spending Wednesday mornings with his Armco breakfast buddies. Also, Don loved the outdoors. He not only loved hunting, trapping and fishing, but was a skillful marksman and crossbow enthusiast. He was a patient teacher, passing on his knowledge and love of the outdoors and his skills in taxidermy to his children. His ability to raise and care for any number of animals amazed his friends and family. He loved watching the Ohio State football team. He also enjoyed mowing his beautiful mini farm. He could be found taking mini breaks from his labors catching reruns of The Andy Griffith Show with a cherry Pepsi in hand or sitting on the porch watching for his daughter Shellie to walk up the drive, as she often did. Don loved being a family man. He was humbled that God would allow him to have such a wonderful long life. Most of all he was humbled that Jesus Christ his Lord loved him and allowed him to share the message of that love with all he came into contact. He is survived by his wife, Joyce Ann Allbright Schmid whom he married June 22, 1968; four children, Julie (Mark) Goodall, Shellie (Patrick) Pollock, Jeff (Carol) Schmid and Erica (Kelby) Van Reeth; ten grandchildren, Jesse (Shelbie) Goodall, Baylie (Brandon) VanDyne, Sydney Goodall, Matthew (Amanda) Pollock, Landan (Lyndsey) Pollock, Reiley Schmid, Evan Schmid, Caleb Van Reeth, Carter Van Reeth and Emersyn Van Reeth; five great grandchildren, Saylor, Avery, twins Hudson and Sutton and Jude; a brother, Steve Schmid; a sister in law, Suzanne Schmid; Brother-in-law/sister-in-law Reed and Bev Smith and Brother-in-law Doug Allbright; several nieces and nephews and his pet dog, Snoopy. In addition to his parents, Don is preceded in death by a brother, David Schmid. Visitation will be held from 11:00 A.M. to 1:00 P.M. on Friday, September 27, 2024 at Westwood Baptist Church where funeral service will be held at 1:00 P.M. with Pastor Seth Ellis officiating. Burial with military honors will conclude at the St. Paul Cemetery, Bald Hill Road. |
