About Douglas B. Vinsel, 66, died November 7, 2016. He was born in Zanesville, OH on July 14, 1950 to Bryce and Bonnie Vinsel. He graduated from Zanesville High School in Ohio, where he was recently inducted into the ZHS Hall of Fame - which he was especially proud of. At ZHS, he helped lead both the baseball and football teams to victory as the COL champions his senior year. Doug went on to play football and lacrosse at Wittenberg University, where he was a member of their small college football national championship team in 1969. He received his BA from Wittenburg University in June 1972. Doug married his high school sweetheart, Tammy, in 1972. He received his Master's from Duke University in May 1974.

Doug had a long and fulfilling career in healthcare, culminating in serving as Executive Vice President and COO at WakeMed in Raleigh from 1984 to 2006, and as President/ CEO of Duke Raleigh Hospital from 2006 until his retirement in December 2012.

He achieved numerous accolades during his career. Most notably, being named to the Triangle Business Leader's Hall of Fame in 2009, and recognition as one of the Triangle's 100 Most Influential Business Leaders by the Triangle Business Journal in 2012.

He treasured his time with friends and colleagues and took great pride in his leadership role at the hospital. He retired in 2012 in order to spend more time with those he cherished most - his beloved family.

Doug embodied the spirit of a warrior - fighting a long and courageous battle with cancer for many years.

He is survived by his wife of over 44 years, Tammy; 5 children, Mike, Kerry, Katie, Kristina, and Scott; 9 grandchildren; his mother, Bonnie; and brother, Jay.

A memorial service will be held at 2pm Saturday, November 12, 2016 at Bay Leaf Baptist Church in Raleigh.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Doug Vinsel Endowment Fund through Duke Raleigh Hospital. Link for how to donate:
