About | Dr. Howard Louis Culbertson, 94 of Zanesville died 5:12 at p.m. Sunday, April 12, 2009, at his residence with his adopted family and his dogs at his side following a short battle with cancer. He was born Tuesday, April 14, 1914 in Zanesville the son of Dr. Lewis R.and Edith Sophia (Popp) Culbertson. He was a 1932 graduate of Zanesville High School, 1936 graduate of Ohio State University where he received his doctorate degree in optometry. He worked as an optometrist in Zanesville & Baltimore Ohio. He also had a teaching degree and taught history & math while his Optometry business was just starting out. He & his wife were members of the Hiesey Glass Collectors Club of America and he was a Ham Operator with his station call letters WAFYE. As a young man he was very active at the Central Presbyterian Church where he sang in the choir. He was also a past member of the Zanesville Memorial Band. He is survived by several nieces, nephews and his several close friends and caregivers. Preceded in death in addition to his parents were his wife, Esther ( Lewis ) Culbertson, and two sisters Constance Maxine Taylor,Edith Janet Winkleman and two infant children. A graveside service will be held 11:00 a.m. Friday, April 17th at Greenwood Cemetery, 1413 Greenwood Avenue Zanesville, OH, with Chaplain Tim Patton officiating.
