| About | Dr. Sterling Wallace Obenour, 84, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, October 17, 2012. He was born on January 20, 1928 in Columbus Ohio to Dr. Sterling Obenour and Dorothy Duvall Obenour. Dr. Obenour graduated from Lash High School in 1945 and The Ohio State University in 1948. While at The Ohio State University he was privileged to be a member of the Marching Band. For many years Dr. Obenour continued to participate in the Alumni Band and marched in the famed Script Ohio. He was a proud trumpet player in TBDBITL. Sterling or better known as “Obie” by his colleagues and friends received his medical degree from Cornell University Medical School in 1952. He completed his internship and Residency program at University Hospitals in Cleveland Ohio and then proudly served his country in the United States Air Force in Greenville South Carolina. Obie returned to Zanesville in 1959 to practice medicine with his father. Dr. Obenour was a very well respected surgeon who specialized in General and Vascular Surgery. He served on the staff at both Bethesda and Good Samaritan Hospitals. He also was President of the Medical staff at Good Samaritan Hospital, President of the Muskingum County Academy of Medicine. President of the Ohio Chapter of the American College of Surgeons, and served as a Governor of the American College of Surgeons. Obie was a member of Grace United Methodist Church and a former member of the Zanesville Country Club. Following his retirement in 1993, Obie was able to devote more time to several hobbies. He was a licensed pilot and loved visiting many areas in the United States and Canada with his wife Mary. Flying his plane was a passion for him and he was a skilled pilot. Expanding his photography skills he established his own small commercial business and traveled many back roads to photograph different subjects. He developed his own photographs and was a perfectionist in all that he did. Obie was able to combine his love of flying and photography by producing beautiful aerial photographs. Many of his photographs can be seen today lining the halls of both Genesis hospitals and the Zanesville Country Club. Music was also an important part of Obies life and he was a member of the Muskingum Valley Symphonic Winds and the Zanesville Memorial Band for many years. Dr. Obenour is survived by his beloved wife of 60 years Mary (Kirkpatrick) and his children: Kathryn (Chuck Miller) of Berkeley California, Scott (Robin) of Zanesville, Bruce (Jillian) of Dublin, Ohio and Laura (Terry) Dunn also of Zanesville. He is also survived by his adoring grandchildren: Wyatt and Teal Miller, Abbie and Bennett Obenour, Kathryn (Mo) Salem, and Marlayna and Brayden Dunn, Jessica Miller, Sarah (Adam) Martin, Kyle and Reid Graham, and Hannah Dunn. Sisters-in-law: Patricia Obenour of Akron, Ohio and Ann (Don) McLeod of Toronto, Ontario, and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a brother Malcolm Obenour and a sister Anne Obenour Babcock. The family would like to thank the kind staff and nurses of Good Samaritan Hospital, Emeritus at North Hills and Genesis Hospice who cared for him and supported them in his final days. The Family is being served by the BRYAN & SNIDER FUNERAL HOME 2318 Maple Ave. where calling hours will be Sunday, October 21, 2012 from 1 to 4 PM. A private burial will follow at Memorial Park at a later date. |
