About | Eloise R. (Derry) Hoover Johnston went to be with the Lord on December 28, 2009, following a lengthy illness. Born on March 29, 1925, she was the eldest child of the late Walter and Hazel (Reamy) Derry of Zanesville. She married Raymond E. Hoover of Crestline in 1947 and he preceded her in 1964, she then married Richard S. Johnston, Sr. of Zanesville in 1975 and he survives. In addition to her husband, she is survived by two daughters, Marcia (Ron) Burkhart of Bucyrus and Beverly (Michael) Sapienza of Columbus; two stepsons, Richard (Martha) Johnston, Jr. of Cincinnati, and Michael Johnston of Newark; five grandchildren, Douglas Burkhart of Cleveland, Christopher (Kim) Burkhart and Sarah (Michael) McGrady of Bucyrus, Kristin Brake and fiancée Eric Kjellander of Chicago, and Megan Brake of Columbus; six step-grandchildren, Tara (Brian) Preston, Mark (Sarah) Johnston, Craig Johnston, and Elisa Johnston all of the Cincinnati area, Beth Ann (Dan) Robertson of New Albany, and Adam Johnston of Newark; five great- grandchildren, Dylan, Derek, and Drayton Burkhart, and Carter and Ella McGrady all of Bucyrus; two step-great-grandchildren, Alex Johnston and Kiley Preston of Cincinnati; one sister and brother-in-law, Margaret and Tom Caw of Pataskala; one brother and sister-in-law, Bryce and Mary Alice Derry of Longview, Texas; many nieces and nephews and their spouses and children. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one brother, Robert (Carol) Derry, Zanesville. Eloise graduated from Zanesville High School in 1942 and Capital University with a BS in Education in 1946. She lived in the Crawford County area from 1946-1975. Her first teaching job was at Leesville High School, and she also taught at Whetstone, North Robinson, and the current Colonel Crawford High School, through 1975. Many students learned typing, shorthand, math and book-keeping skills under her tutelage. In Zanesville she taught Senior Data Accounting at Mid-East Ohio. She was a long-time member of the former Loss Creek Lutheran Church where she served as Sunday school pianist and then church organist for 10 years. Both prior to her move to Crawford County and currently, she was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Zanesville, where she was a member of the chancel choir and bell choir, and Circle 3 Women's Group. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, both in Crawford and Muskingum Counties, AAUW, Y-City Women's Club and Amateur Organists. As a child, she and her mother, brothers and sister performed for many years in the Zanesville area as the Derry Family Orchestra. Richardson-Davis funeral home is in charge of arrangements, and calling hours will be held one hour prior to the service from 10:00-11:00 a.m. Saturday, January 2, 2010, at the First United Church of Christ, 248 Harding Way West, Galion where a Celebration of Life service will begin at 11:00 a.m. Internment will follow in Sandusky Cemetery.
