About Gladys Marie Shaeffer, 93, of Zanesville died peacefully at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, August 5, 2012 at the home of her caregivers, Clarence and Ann Baker and Teresa Pitcock. She was born December 10, 1918 in Zanesville, a daughter of the late James F. and Mary Barnes Tracey. She retired from Essex Wire, was an active member of Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church, a member of the Friendship Class and formerly served on the Administrative Board. Gladys was an honorary member of the Country Music Hall Of Fame, Ohio Music Country Association, Pleasant Grove Grange, the Senior Citizens Club, Muskingum Pomona State and National Grange for many years. She was also a member of the Zanesville Chapter of the O.C.W.M.A.. Gladys and Ray were also Grand Marshalls at the Zane Trace Commemoration Day Parade and also cut the ribbon at the Muskingum Co. Fair in 1990. Gladys and Ray were also 4-H advisors for 44 years and helped start the first 4-H Saddle Club in the county, "Hoofbeats". They were advisors to the Rowdy Rooster Poultry 4-H Club and Kickin Kountry Square Dance 4-H Club. They enjoyed going on trail rides, going to county and state fairs with the 4-H Clubs, camping and traveling the country.

Surviving are a granddaughter, Jodie Dew of Zanesville; six great grandchildren, John Lyall, Michelle ( Duane) Smith, Heidi Lyall, Hanna Lyall, Kryssa Lyall and Olivia Lyall; eight great great grandchildren, Caleb Lyall, Wyatt German, Ashton Smith, Kylar Smith, Parker Smith, Cyia Lyall, Aliaha Rae Lyall-Spring and Cali Mae Lyall-Spring ; a brother, Arthur Tracey of Waterford; a special nephew, Jeff (Lisa) Tracey of McConnellsville as well as several other nieces and nephews; and a very special friend, Virgil Tedrick of New Concord.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond K. Shaeffer, July 16, 1999; two sons, Bobby Shaeffer and Pat R. Shaeffer; a sister, Louanna Owen; five brothers, Herman, Paul, Samuel, Kenneth and Carl Tracey.

Gladys will be laid to rest beside her husband, Raymond, at Zanesville Memorial Park.
