About | Glenn G. Thompson, well-known White Cottage funeral diractor, was dead on arrival at 5:10pm Saturday, August 2, 1969 at Bethesda Hospital where he was taken by the Zanesville Ambulance Service after being stricken with an apparent heart attack while participating in a Senior Citizens bowling tournament at Military Lanes. He was 65. He had suffered a heart attack in 1964. Mr. Thompson was born January 3, 1904, in White Cottage, a son of William and Nancy Alta Ardrey Thompson and was graduated from Zanesville High School in 1922. Four years later he was graduated from Muskingum College, the same year he also graduated from the Columbus School of Embalming. He graduated from both colleges in the same year by studing at the Columbus school during his junior and senior years at Muskingum. Mr Thompson was widely known as a track athlete while a student at Muskingum College where he set a number of running and jumping records which stood for many years. He was also widely known in the Zanesville area as a softball pitcher for many years before assuming control of the funeral home at the death of his father in 1942. He had worked with his father since completing his studies in Columbus. in 1926. Although his new responsibilities prevented further softball playing he bowled in church leagues for many years.On January 12, 1933, he was married to the former Catherince I Schramm, who survives. Mr. Thompson was a lifelong member of the First United Presbyterian Church in Zanesville where he served for a number of years as president of the board of trustees and later as an elder. He served for 35 years as a member of the board of directors of the YMCA and was a president and secretary of the Muskingum County Funeral Directors Association and for 40 years was a member of the Zanesville Exchange Club. He was also active in United Fund and Red Cross fund drives. He was the first president of Zanesville Young Peoples Federation, a city-wide church organization. Sirviving in addition to his widow are a son, G. William (Bill) Thompson, who was associated with his father in operation of the William Thompson and Son Funeral Home; four grandchildren, Todd, Tim Ted and Tara; a sister, Mrs. John (Elizabeth) Yost of White cottage and two nieces. Asister, Mrs. Lloyd (Esther) Patton is deceased. |
