About Howard “Butch” Zwelling, 81, of Zanesville, died at 3:43 A.M. on Sunday, January 21, 2018, at Grant Medical Center, Columbus. He was born December 11, 1936, in Zanesville, a son of the late Morris and Deborah Berman Zwelling. He graduated from Muskingum College and went on to Ohio Northern College to earn his law degree. He served over the Zanesville Municipal Court for sixteen years and the Muskingum County Court of Common Pleas for six years. Butch then went on to become the Mayor of Zanesville for seven years and then back into private practice. He was a member of the Muskingum County Bar Association, the Ohio State Bar Association, Sertoma, Past President of the Zanesville High School Quarterback Club, and many other organizations. Butch also volunteered at the Animal Shelter, was a member of the Democratic Party, a member of Beth Abraham Synagogue, an avid sports fan of ZHS Athletics and Ohio State sports.

Butch was a true public servant. He served many worthy causes and gave generously to all. He truly loved Zanesville and his family meant the most to him.

He is survived by a son, Ross Zwelling, of the home; two brothers, Jerold and Ivan Zwelling; two grandchildren, Kamden Spiker and Ethan Zwelling; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sister-in-laws, Ruth Zwelling and Rochelle Zwelling.

The family requests NO FLOWERS and instead make a contribution to Zanesville High School Quarterback Club, 1701 Blue Avenue, Zanesville, OH 43701 or to the Animal Shelter Society, 1430 Newark Road, Zanesville, OH 43701.

Friends and family may call from 2:00 – 8:00 P.M. on Wednesday, January 24, 2018 at the BOLIN-DIERKES FUNERAL HOME, 1271 BLUE AVENUE, ZANESVILLE where funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Thursday, January 25, 2018, with Rabbi Jeffrey Elson officiating. He will be laid to rest at Beth Abraham Jewish Cemetery, Zanesville.
