About | James W. "Jim" Smith, 82, passed away Saturday, Sept. 6, 2008, in Naples, Fla. He was a lifelong resident of Zanesville until he relocated to Florida about 15 years ago. Jim was a World War II veteran, serving in the armed forces in Italy. He was a lifelong member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion. While in the Zanesville area, Jim was an avid golfer and a good baseball pitcher. He pitched for some very good semi-pro baseball teams, namely Green Top Cab Co., Judy's Service and Stone's Grill. Survivors include a sister, Suzann Martin of Zanesville; brother, Richard W. "Harpo" Smith of Upper Arlington; a brother and sister-in-law, Danny "Hack" and Betty Taylor Smith of Port Charlotte, Fla.; a sister-in-law, Sandy Smith of Zanesville; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews, and great-great-nieces and nephews. Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Daniel "Dan" and Clara Sharrock Smith; and a brother, Louis "Pon" Smith. A memorial service for Jim will be held in Port Charlotte, Fla., and a pending a graveside memorial service will be held at St. Paul's Cemetery in Sonora.
