John D. Sulsberger Obituary

About John Diehl Sulsberger, 18, son of Dr. and Mrs. J. Diehl Susberger of Dresden Road, died at 10:45 AM in Good Samaritan Hospital where he had been a patient since Dec. 12. Death was attributed to cancer.

The former Zanesville High School football star was first hospitalized at Good Samaritan early in November and subsequently underwent surgery at University Hospital in Columbus. He was released form University Dec. 10.

One of the finest linemen ever to play for ZHS, he was awarded an athletic scholarship to Ohio State and was termed the outstanding llineman on the freshman team by Coach Glenn Ellison. He earned All-Ohio first team honors during his senior season and was named to both the All-Central Ohio League offensive and defensive teams. He was also considered the outstanding lineman in the annual North-South high school all-star game at Canton last August.

An honor student a ZHS, he was a member of the Student Council, Thespians, Science Club, had roles in both the junior and senior class plays and was in the English honors class. He graduated last spring. In addition to football, he also participated in track. He attended Westview Elementary School and Roosevelt Junior High.

He was born in Zanesville, May 8, 1945, a son of Dr. J. Diehl and Elizabeth Henneberg Sulsberger.

Her was a member of St. James; Episcopal Church where he served as an acolyte.

Surviving, in addition to his parents is an uncle, Harry Sulsberger of Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

The body was taken to Bolin-Bryan Funeral Home and later to St. James; Episcopal Church where it will remain until time for graveside services at 3pm today in Memorial Park. Rev. Jack Bennett will officiate.
