John was born June 13, 1937, to Carl and Nellie (Eby) Ray and attended Zanesville High School before enlisting in the United States Navy at the age of 17. John saw action all over the world, and he had many amazing stories from those travels. John did not speak much about his duties in the war, but we know he proudly loved his country and he loved his job. John retired honorably from the United States Navy in 1975. After the war John worked as a gas station supervisor before he became an employee and retiree of Bethesda Hospital.
