About OXFORD, PA: John Henry Baker of Oxford, PA, formerly of Zanesville, Ohio, died peacefully March 9, 2016. He was born in Zanesville in April of 1928 and was the son of Paul A. and Grace Knoedler Baker and the loving husband of Elisabeth (Betty) Hillers Baker for 54 years.John is survived by his wife Betty and his children: Susan (Michael) of Pennsylvania and Tom (Valerie) of New York, and four grandchildren, Weston, Marina, Julia and Alisa. He is survived by two sisters-in-law Janet (Al) Clausi of Connecticut and Carolyn (Robert) Menges of Texas. He was preceded in death by his sister Eleanor Baker Perry and brother-in-law Mark Bolin Perry.A lifelong resident of Zanesville, John was a graduate of the Zanesville public schools where he was involved in all aspects of music. He was also a graduate of Otterbein College, the American Institute of Banking, the Graduate School of Banking of the University of Wisconsin and the National Commercial Credit School of the University of Oklahoma. He began his professional banking career in 1953 with Ohio National Bank, then Citizens National Bank (later National City Bank). He specialized in commercial credit and retired as President in 1990. He then continued as a member of the bank's Board of Directors, serving as chairman.John served 13 years in the United States Marine Corps and Reserves attaining the rank of Captain.John's community involvement in Zanesville included: Jaycees, United Way, Chamber of Commerce, YMCA, and the Ohio State 4-H Foundation. For his over 55 years of volunteer work and serving as a member of the Board of the Salvation Army, he received the prestigious "Others" award. He was a member of Saint John's Lutheran Church where a service celebrating his life will be held at a later date.
