About John William “Bill” Fitz, age 91 of Zanesville, died 7:04 PM, Monday, May 1, 2017 at Genesis Morrison House Hospice in Zanesville.

He was born Friday, October 9, 1925 in Zanesville, the son of David Smith Fitz and Mary M. (Wagner) Fitz. He was married on November 24, 1944 to Dorothea L. (Schramm) Fitz who survives.

Mr. Fitz served in the Army Signal Corp in WWII for three years. Eight months of those years were in Japan. When he arrived back in the states he operated a drug and variety store for three years. He then with his wife Dorothy operated the Fitz Children Shoppe on Dresden Road for seventeen years. After selling the shop they operated the concession stands for twenty years at Riverside Park.

In addition to his wife he is survived by 8 children: Marsha (Pat) Norris, Linda Lutz, Kristy (Jeff) Hall, Becky (Roger) Cook, Sherry (Jim) Bennett, Bill (Jean) Fitz, Karen Bash and David Fitz; 16 grandchildren: 17 great-grand-children; 2 great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one grandson, Douglas Baldwin; one sister: Ruth Fitz Haumesser; one son-in-law-Tim Bash, father and mother-in-law, Mildred and Robert Schramm and one special Aunt Hilda Wagner.

The family wanted to express their heart felt gratitude to the Genesis Hospice for their kind and loving care.

Donations may be made in his honor to the Genesis Morrison House Hospice 713 Forest Ave, Zanesville or St. Nicholas Catholic Church, 925 East Main Street, Zanesville.

Friends may call from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM on Thursday, May 4, 2017 at the Hillis, Combs & Nestor Funeral Home, 935 Forest Avenue, Zanesville, OH. A funeral service will be held 1:00 PM on Friday, May 5, 2017 at Hillis, Combs & Nestor Funeral Home 935 Forest Avenue Zanesville with Fr. Martin Ralko officiating. Burial will conclude in the Mt. Olive Cemetery Zanesville.
