About Dean School of Dentistry AUGUSTA, Ga. - Entered into rest Sunday, October 24, 2004 at the Veterans Administration Hospital, Dr. Judson C. Hickey, retired founding Dean of the Medical College of Georgia School of Dentistry. Dr. Hickey and his wife Jean, of 57 years, are the parents of one daughter; two sons; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Sons, Dr. Judson S. Hickey and wife, Cay, William D. Hickey and wife, Pat, of Augusta; daughter, Nancy Binkow and husband, Phillip of Atlanta, Ga.; sister, Carolyn Crawmer of Galveston, Texas. Dr. Hickey's parents were Dr. William Carl Hickey and Marie Campbell Hickey, both natives of Ohio. A native of Ohio, he graduated from Lash High School in Zanesville, Ohio, he served in the V-12s at Ohio Wesleyan University and became an Ensign after training at Ford Schuyler, N.Y. He was in the South Pacific on a LSM for 18 months during World War II. After graduation from Dental School at Ohio State U niversity in 1950, he received a Dental Residency in the US Public Health Service in Staten Island, NY., during the Korean War. He received a Master of Science Degree in Physiology in 1955, and is a Board Certified Prosthodontist. Following a dental internship and two additional years of service in the United States Public Health Service Hospital in Staten Island, New York, he was appointed to the faculty of the Ohio State University College of Dentistry in the Department of Prosthodontics and remained there for nine years. In 1962 Dr. Hickey was appointed Professor and Chairman of the Department of Prosthodontics at the University of Kentucky College of Dentistry and became Assistant Dean at that school in 1965. In 1966 he was appointed Founding Dean and Professor of Prosthodontics at the Medical College of Georgia School of Dentistry and continued in the capacity until 1987. He became interim President of MCG until 1988. Dr. Hickey was past President of the American Board of Prostho dontics and also served as President of the American Prosthodontics Society, the Academy of Dentistry Prosthetics, and the Carl O. Boucher Prosthodontics Conference. He was a member of the American College of Prosthodontists, the International Associates for Dental Research, and a honorary member of the Academy of General Dentistry and the American Academy of Craniomandibular Disorders. Dr. Hickey received the Outstanding Teacher of the Year Award at the Ohio State University in 1955 and at the University of Kentucky College of Dentistry in 1965. He was the recipient of the Dentist of the Year Award of the Eastern District Dental Society of Georgia in 1969; the prestigious Ohio State University Centennial Award in 1970; the IADR Research Award in Prosthodontics in 1971; the Special Appreciation Award of the Georgia Dental Association in 1976; and the Distinguished Alumni Award of the Ohio State University in 1977. He was author or co-author of 43 scientific publications and two textbo oks in Prosthodontics. He made many presentations to local, state, national, and international dental organizations on topics relating to prosthodontics and dental education. Dr. Hickey was also Editor of the Journal of Prosthetic Dentistry for over ten years. He was a member of Rotary International Augusta Rotary Club, had been on the Administrative Board and Choir at Aldersgate United Methodist Church. Served on the Board of Directors, Augusta Radiation Therapy Center was chairman of the Division of Hospital and Health, Untied Way Campaign, 1978. He made many presentations to service clubs and civic groups. The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 6-8 p.m. at the Funeral Home. A reception will be held at 12, noon, on Wednesday, October 27, 2004 at Aldersgate United Methodist Church. Funeral services will follow at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, October 27, 2004 from Aldersgate United Methodist Church with the Rev. John Whatley officiating. Serving as Pallbearers will be Dr. Judson S. Hickey, William D. Hickey, Phillip Binkow, Blake Hickey, Dr. Wade Hammer, Dr. Art Rahn, Dr. Victor Della-Giustina and Judson Stephen Hickey, "Boomer Hickey". Honorary Pallbearers will be the first two graduating classes of the Medical College of Georgia School of Dentistry. Burial will be at Westover Memorial Park.
