About | MARCO ISLAND, FL: Margaret L. Maack, 76, of Marco Island, FL, formerly of Dayton, OH, passed away Sunday, December 4, 2011 following a valiant fight with cancer. She was the beloved wife of Hans D. Maack, and loving mother of Jeff Stout, Joel Stout and Joel's wife, Mary Sarah. Margaret was more than a wonderful grandmother to her beloved granddaughter, Jennifer Stout, whom she and Hans raised from age 4 to adulthood. She was also a beloved grandmother to Emily Fitzgerald, Sydnie Rangel and Sarah Rangel. Margaret Louise Kappel was born in Zanesville, Ohio to parents George M. Kappel and Wilma M. Harmon, on Valentine's Day, February 14, 1935. She, along with older sister, Wanda, and younger sister, Georgia, were raised by their father in Zanesville. Margaret had a large role in helping maintain the household and took on responsibilities not typical for a girl of that young age. Graduating from Zanesville High School in 1953, she began taking college courses toward a degree in primary education while she worked as a pathology transcriptionist at Bethesda Hospital. She married Jack Stout, also of Zanesville, in 1956. The Stout family was very dear to Margaret, particularly Jack's mother, Marie, who loved her like one of her own daughters. Margaret moved with Jack to New Jersey in 1958 where sons Jeff and Joel were born; returning in 1962 to Ohio and settling in the Dayton area. In 1968 Margaret's mother, Wilma Slonaker, passed away, leaving Margaret's teenage younger sister, Marcia, with no parents. Margaret would not accept any other option than bringing young Marcia into her home. Also in 1968, Margaret completed her Bachelor's Degree at Wright State University. In addition to her lifelong love of the arts, Margaret greatly valued and enjoyed learning, and, in turn, educating. She continued on at Wright State to earn a Master's of Education degree in 1973. Through her professional life as teacher, Margaret was a wonderful influence on thousands of young people. She taught third, fourth and fifth grades at Normandy Elementary School in Centerville, Ohio for almost 30 years. Margaret was very endeared to her teaching colleagues at Normandy. She cherished those friendships which provided her with emotional support, great fun and endless fond memories even long after her retirement in 1996. In 1978 Margaret fell in love with Hans Maack and they married in the summer of 1979. Together they enjoyed wonderful times with family, including Hans' daughter Jessica, Jessica's husband Robert Rangel, and Hans' son Hans W. Margaret and Hans also enjoyed fascinating travels around the world and knocking golf balls around the course. In 2004, they moved to Marco Island, FL where, for the second time, Margaret designed a beautiful new home for them. Margaret and Hans' had an incredible and loving 33 years together and their retirement years were enriched by being parents to their beloved granddaughter, Jennifer. As a final statement of her commitment to education and to improving the lives of others, Margaret donated her body to medical science. As she requested, there will be no formal service in her honor. Margaret said that she would prefer people celebrate her life by reminiscing on their fondest and most cherished times spent together. |
