| About | Martha Madeline Wilkins Varner Podiwin, 90, of Zanesville, died at 5:40 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2009, at Genesis Good Samaritan Hospital. Madeline was born Oct. 18, 1918, in Zanesville, the daughter of the late Perry and Ethel Caton Wilkins. She was a graduate of Lash High School, Meredith Business College and completed several computer courses through Ohio State University. She previously worked for Zanesville Fruit Co., First Community Church, Green and Wallace CPA Firm and retired from Jared Block and Associates as a bookkeeper and office manager. She was a member of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, Ladies Aid, Golden Agers and treasurer of Bethesda Rose Society. Madeline enjoyed being with her family, playing cards and bingo. Surviving Madeline are her children, Helen "Toni" Mae Barks of Zanesville, Russell Lee (Barbara) Varner of South Zanesville and James E. (Edda) Varner of Zanesville; grandchildren, Russell Varner Jr., William (Pam) Barks and Julie (Steve) Twigg; four great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, George R. Varner; second husband, Gunter Podiwin; two sisters; one brother; and her very special dachshund, Herman. Calling hours will be 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 9, at Bryan & Snider Funeral Home, 2318 Maple Ave. and one hour prior to the services at the church. Funeral services are 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 10, 2009, at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, 128 S. Seventh St., with Pastor Dan Sparling officiating. Committal service will follow in Beulah Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Trinity Lutheran Preschool, 128 S. Seventh St., Zanesville, Ohio 43701. |
