A member of the National Honor Society, she graduated from Zanesville High School in 1959 where she had been the treasurer for the Friendship Club, and a member the Scholarship Team and of the Daughters of Zanesville. She studied chemistry and medicine and graduated from Salem College in North Carolina in 1963. She was part of the group that helped to start the Clintonville Academy (Columbus) and she was active in the Christian Fellowship Church during its founding years.
