About Mary Elizabeth Hughes, 81 of Zanesville, died unexpectedly Tuesday, February 7, 2017, at her home. She was born Saturday, August 31, 1935 in Zanesville, the daughter of Walter D. Norris and Lena C. (Harris) Norris. She married John Clayton Hughes, Sr. on Saturday, March 2, 1957, and was a lifelong dedicated member of Church of God and Saints of Christ. Mary was a loving and caring wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother who loved the time she spent with her family. She loved to shop, but most of all loved to sing. Mary could always be heard singing the hymns she loved so much at church.Mary is survived by two sons: John C. and Jacqueline E. Hughes, Jr. and Howard L. Hughes both of Zanesville; three grandchildren: Alicia M. Hughes, Chandler J. Curtis and Matthew L. Curtis all of Columbus; two great grandchildren: Gabrielle and Ryan; three sisters-in-law: Maxine Franklin and Nell Norris both of Warren and Dorothy Norris of Zanesville; two brothers-in-law: Irie Hughes of Zanesville and Dean Hughes of Powell; several cousins, nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Mary was preceded in death by her husband: John C. Hughes, Sr. who died April 19, 2002; eight brothers: James Norris, LeRoy Norris, Ervin Norris, Sr., Virgil Norris, Sr., Daniel Norris, Sr., Robert Norris and Raymond Norris.Friends may call from 2:00 to 4:00 & 6:00 to 8:00 PM, Sunday, February 12, 2017, at the Hillis, Combs & Nestor Funeral Home, 935 Forest Avenue, Zanesville, and one hour prior to services from 10:00 to 11:00 AM on Monday at the church. Funeral Services will be held 11:00 AM, Monday, February 13, 2017, at the Church of God and Saints of Christ, 516 Cliffwood Avenue, Zanesville, with Elder Mark Cunningham officiating. Mary will be laid to rest next to her beloved husband in Woodlawn Cemetery.
