Osborn Wiseman Obituary

Graduation Year Class of 1932
Date of Passing (unknown)
About Lt. J.G. Osborne Wiseman who graduated from Lash H.S, in 1932
who sadly gave it all to help save his fellow soldiers and country against the Japanese army in 1942. Thanks for your loyal and faithful service to our country who sadly gave it all.
Osborne B. Wiseman was born in Zanesville, Ohio on February 20, 1915. He graduated from Lash High School in 1932. After his graduation, he was appointed to the United States Naval Academy and graduated in 1938. He was designated a Naval Aviator and promoted to Lieutenant, Junior Grade, serving as a dive bomber during WWII.
In April of 1942, Wiseman played a pivotal role in the Doolittle Raid on Tokyo. He discovered a Japanese fleet while on a scouting mission ahead of the American task force. He returned to the U.S. battleships and due to mandatory radio silence dropped a weighted message onto the deck of the USS Enterprise with the information. This prompted the launch of a successful raid.
Wiseman participated in the Battle of Midway on June 4, 1942. His squadron’s objective was the destruction of four Japanese aircraft carriers. He flew two sorties, one against the carrier Soryu in the morning, and the second that afternoon targeting the last of the four, the Hiryu. He successfully struck the ship and helped seal the fate of the final remaining enemy aircraft carrier in the Midway Battle Fleet. This produced an overwhelming victory and became the turning point of the war.
After striking the Hiryu, Wiseman’s SBD Dauntless Dive Bomber was swarmed by Japanese fighter pilots. He was last seen attempting to fight them off. Wiseman was declared Killed in Action and was awarded the Navy Cross for his “extraordinary heroism and distinguished service.” The Navy honored him by naming a ship after him, the USS Wiseman DE 667, which was commissioned in April 1944.
May Lt J.G. Wiseman Rest in Peace
