About Raymond Earl Mercer, 93, went to be with the Lord on January 3, 2015. Mr. Mercer was born on October 28, 1921 in Zanesville, the son of Harold Wakefield Mercer and Mary Fisher Mercer.
He was a veteran of World War II having flown as a Sargent in the Army Air Core. He retired from Ohio Power in 1983 and served for many years as a Gideon. A graduate of Lash High School and an avid sports enthusiast, Mr. Mercer was a gymnast, swim team member, and a Golden Glove Boxer during High School. He enjoyed archery, hunting, bowling and golf throughout his life. Although he wasn’t able to participate in sports in later years, he loved being outdoors walking and picking up sticks. Mr. Mercer was a member of the Cornerstone Full Gospel Church in Duncan Falls.
He is survived by his wife of 69 years Joyce Anderson Mercer, sons Gerald of Newark and Jeffrey (Lynn) of Blue Rock, daughter Carolyn (William) Grossman of Pleasant Hill California, daughter-in-law Katha Mercer of Duncan Falls, sister Betsy Russi of Zanesville, brother Ronald Mercer of Frazeysburg, grandchildren Tony (Dee) Mercer, Jolene (Trent) Barnes, Chris Grossman, Lindsay (Bryant) Burkhardt, Marc (Lisa) Mercer and Matt Mercer, five great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, John R. Mercer, brothers Harold Jr., Marion, Donald, James and William and sister Bonnie.
Friends may call from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at Farus Funeral Home in Duncan Falls on Thursday, January 8th with funeral services officiated by Pastor Steve Harrop immediately following calling hours. A caring cremation will take place. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Genesis Hospice, 713 Forest Ave., Zanesville, OH 43701.
