| About | Col. Reed Davis Achauer, 85, 436 Putnam Ave., died at 12:47 a.m., Friday, November 13, 1987, at the Good Samaritan Medical Center after a lengthy illness. He was a lifetime resident of the area, a member of the Grace United Methodist Church, the American Legion, Lodge of Amity Number 5, F&AM, a 32nd degree Mason, a 1924 graduate of Ohio State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in civil engineering, and a 1940 graduate of Harvard Law School. He was a member of the Muskingum County and Ohio State Bar Associations and had a law office in the First Trust Bank Building in Zanesville. Mr. Achauer was a retired senior negotiator for the Renegotiation Board, a federal agency that recovers excessive profits from government and defense contracts. He was an army veteran of World War II serving as an officer on the War Department Special Staff in Washington making top level, secret inspections and investigations of the war mobilization effort. Achauer was responsible for planning, building, and commanding Civilian Conservation Corps Camps in Ohio and the Pacific Northwest. Mr. Achauer was principally responsible for the restoration of Schoenbrunn Village in New Philadelphia. He was born Jan. 21, 1902, in Zanesville to Herman Frederick Achauer and Clara Frances Claudy Achauer. He is survived by his wife, the former Ruth Haven Ward, who he married June 30, 1930. In addition to his wife, he is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Diana S. John, Westerville, Mrs. Alyce-Anne Meadows, Phoenix, Ariz., Mrs. Nancy Rykwalder, Tampa, Fla.; one son, David Reed Achauer, Ann Arbor, Mich.; ten grandchildren and one great-grandchild; one sister, Alice Claudy Achauer of the Helen Purcell Home. Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at the Bryan Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home with Mr. Jeff Armbrust officiating. Burial will follow in Woodlawn Cemetery. |
