About | Richard Stanley Johnston, 87, of Newark, Ohio, formerly of Zanesville, passed away at 11:15 a.m. Tuesday, September 7, 2010 at Sharonbrooke assisted living. He was born July 7, 1923 at Zanesville, the son of the late Waldo Leroy and Faye Warden Johnston. Mr. Johnston was a 1941 graduate of Zanesville High School and a graduate of Ohio State University with a B.S. in education. He received his masters degree from Ohio University. He was a resident of Muskingum County most of his lifetime. He was a high school band director at several of the county school systems for 16 years and associate band director in Zanesville for many years. He also taught privately for many years. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and was in the Air Force Band. He was a member of a B-29 combat crew. He belonged to the LaFayette Lodge #79, Scottish Rite and Shrine, Zanesville Yacht Club, Phi Mu Alpha Symphony Honorary Music Fraternity, St. John Lutheran church, and was a Amateur Radio Operator. He is survived by two sons, Richard S. Jr. (Martha) Johnston of Sharonville, Ohio, and Michael J. (Debbie) Johnston of Newark, Ohio; six grandchildren; and four great grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by wives, Alean and Eloise; and a brother, Roger Private services were held at 11:00 a.m. at DeLong-Baker & Lanning Funeral Home Thursday with Pastor Peter Mathewson officiating and interment was at Memorial Park Cemetery with full military rites. |
