About | Robert A. Merry, age 81 of Zanesville, passed away peacefully at 3:30 am Sunday June 22, 2008 at the home of his son. He was born January 29, 1927 in Zanesville and was the son of the late Merle Lewis and Mary White Lewis Merry. He graduated from Lash High School and received his B.S. degree from Ohio University. Robert enjoyed people, nature and woodworking. He operated a gas station, a tractor dealership and was a teacher for several years at Maysville High School. In 1978, Robert retired from teaching and worked full time on his tree farm. He was very active in woodworking groups, working with ODNR, a 25 year Tree Master, volunteering at Dawes Arboretum, and helping friends. He was also an avid OSU and ZHS football and basketball fan as well. Surviving are four sons: Robert B. (Susan) Merry of Salem, Eric Merry of Fort Myers, Fla., Douglas (Betsy) Merry of Zanesville and Scott (Cindi) Merry of Zanesville; a daughter, Laraine (John) McCoy of Gahanna; daughter-in-law, Viva Merry of Petersburg, Va.; sister-in-law, Bernice Merry and two nephews of Kirkersville. He was blessed with 14 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Carroll Jayne (Scott) Merry, who died June 6, 2001; a son, Alton Merry; brother, Edward Merry and a sister, Anna Mae Erwin. Calling hours will be from 5 – 7 pm Tuesday June 24, 2008 with funeral services beginning at 7 pm at the Bryan & Snider Funeral Home, 2318 Maple Ave. Cremation will follow. Memorial contributions may be given to Dawes Arboretum, 7770 Jacksontown Rd. SE, Newark OH 43056 or the James Cancer Center, OSU Columbus, OH. |
