About | Robert D. Benton, 92, of Royal Oak, formerly of Birmingham, died at home in his sleep Jan. 13, 2009. He was born in 1916, in Licking County, to the late Emry and Ila Benton, and was a 1934 graduate of Lash High School. He became a licensed steam and boiler engineer working in the electrical power industry and served honorably as a U.S. Army officer in North Africa during World War II. He then began a long career working in adult education with the Henry George School of Social Science that promotes the use of a single land tax to reduce the social abuses associated with property development. He moved his family to the Detroit area from Delaware in 1962. He dedicated the last decades of his life to the management of his own rental properties and loving his family. Mr. Benton is survived by his devoted wife of 66 years, Dorothy McMaster; his daughter, Barbara (William) Miller; his three sons, Bruce (Rose), Daniel (Carol) and James (Mary K.); nine grandchildren, Robert and Scott Moreland, and Mark, Sean, Bradley, Laura, Thomas, Summer and Griffin Benton; two great-grandchildren; and his niece, Ruth Headley, formerly of Newark. A private family memorial service is planned. His cremated remains will be interred with those of his parents in Ohio. |
