About Dr. Robert E. King, 84

SOLEBURY, Pa. - Dr. Robert E. King, emeritus professor of industrial pharmacy at the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia (formerly the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and Science), died on March 23, 2008. He was 84 and a resident of Solebury, Pa. for more than 40 years.

He was born in Zanesville, the son of the late Ray Harrison and Edna Elizabeth Bowman King. He was educated in the Zanesville public schools and received his baccalaureate degree in pharmacy from Ohio State University. He was selected as a Melandy fellow to the Graduate School of the University of Minnesota, where he earned a doctor of philosophy degree in pharmaceutical chemistry. He joined the Merck Sharp and Dohme Research Laboratories, where he served as a research associate for 13 years. He was invited to join the faculty of the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and Science. After 25 years, he retired as emeritus professor of industrial pharmacy. He served as a consultant to the pharmaceutical industry and government agencies. He was considered to be an authority on the manufacture and quality control of parenteral (injectable) drugs. He was the author of several pharmaceutical texts and served as editor for several professional journals.

He was active as a member of St. Philips Episcopal Church in New Hope, Pa., where he served as warden for more than 20 years. In addition to professional organizations, he was a member of the Philadelphia branch of the Charles Dickens Fellowship and the Solebury Farmers' Club. Following retirement he was active in the formation of the Lambertville Food Pantry and served for 14 years s a hospice volunteer out of the Doylestown Hospital. He had a lifelong interest in literature, church history and gardening.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Jane Klein King; his three sons, Timothy P. of Providence, Utah, Peter R. of Oxford, Pa. and Jonathan D. of Rock Hall, Md.; his two daughters, Susan J. of Plymouth Meeting, Pa. and Dr. Christina King Smith of Ardmore, Pa.; and his seven grandchildren, Victoria, Elizabeth, Catherine, Rebecca, Heather, Charlotte and Nathan.
He was preceded in death by sister, Jayne Szabo of Zanesville.

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 29, at St. Philip's Church, Chapel Road at River Road in New Hope, Pa. Interment will follow in the Trinity Church Cemetery in Solebury, Pa.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to St. Philips Episcopal Church, 10 Chapel Road, New Hope, Pa. 18938.
