About | Robert G. Stillwell, 81, of Zanesville, passed away at 2:20 am Friday June 30, 2006, at Genesis Good Samaritan Hospital. He was born August 4, 1924 in Kokomo, Indiana, the son of the late Samuel and Katherine Theiss Stillwell. Mr. Stillwell attended East Liverpool City Schools prior to graduation from Lash High School in 1942. He received his bachelor of arts degree from Muskingum College, and his master's degree from the University of Colorado. He retired from the Zanesville City Schools, where he served as an elementary teacher, and as principal of McIntire and McKinley Elementery Schools. Although he lived 81 years, Robert was still very much a kid at heart. His contagiaous enthusiasm toward anything from frontier stories to old cowboy movies inspired his family and every student he encountered toward a lifelong love of history. Robert was a tech sergeant in WW II serving with the First Army as it moved across France and Germany. He was one of the infantry soldiers who liberated the prisoners from the Nazi Death Camps and also met the Russians at the Elbe River, 60 miles from Berlin. He was transferred to the 51st Field Hospital when the war was over before his return to the United States. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Mona Thomas Stillwell, whom he married June 4, 1949; daughters, Kathy (Rick) Dunn, Karen Frick, and Kay (Ryan) Timm of Zanesville; sons, Kenton (Beth) Stillwell and Klint Stillwell of Zanesville; grandchildren, Chad (Carrie) Dunn, Scott (Molly) Dunn, Courtney (Brian) Lemity, Ryan Snider, Michael (Laurie) Snider, Joshua Frick, Kyle, Jessica and Allison Stillwell, and Ethan Timm; six great granchildrenn; and sister-in-law,Verna Stillwell of Zanesville. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Sam , Dale and Dan Stillwell; three sisters, Katherine Burkhart, Betty Barnes and Dorothy Bowman; and a son-in-law, Bill Frick. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery. |
