Rodger Humm, 86, passed away on February 19 in Arlington, Virginia following a brief illness. Rodger was born in Sioux City, Iowa in 1937 to Ernest “E.G.” Humm and Wilma Doak, who later moved to Zanesville in 1953 to open Lindsey Soft Water located on Maple Avenue. He had three brothers, John aka “Jack”, deceased; Larry, who resides in Brockport, New York; and Mark, who resides in Tarrytown, New York. Jack was a member of the Zanesville City Council. Rodger was very athletic and played baseball and basketball at Zanesville High School and was a starting forward on the ZHS 1955 Ohio State Championship basketball team. In 1959, Rodger married his high-school sweet-heart, Ann Elizabeth Harvey, whose father Newell, was a photographer and later Editor-in-Chief of the Zanesville Times Recorder. Ann was a Registered Nurse. Rodger received his undergraduate and Ph.D degrees in psychology from Ohio State University. He taught for 2 years at Oberlin College, before moving to Muncie, Indiana in 1967 to assume a professorship at Ball State University, where he remained until his retirement in 1999. While at Ball State, Rodger was President of the University Senate and chaired the University’s Promotion and Tenure Committee. He was widely respected for his willingness to listen and sense of fairness. Rodger and Ann had two children, Stephen Randall of Arlington, Virginia, and Dustin Ryan of Muncie and Warsaw, Indiana. Rodger and Ann were both avid golfers, and Rodger enjoyed watching horseracing and reading historical books, especially biographies. |
