| About | Sheila Lynn Truesdale Rains passed away peacefully on June 17, 2026, in Huntsville, Alabama surrounded by the love of her family. Born on December 12, 1943, in Zanesville, Ohio, Sheila was the daughter of Kenneth Leroy Truesdale and Dorothy Rausch Truesdale. She often spoke fondly of her childhood in Zanesville and cherished the memories she shared with her family. While completing their medical training in Cincinnati, Ohio, Sheila met the love of her life, Darrel Estle Rains. Their shared dedication to caring for others formed the foundation of a marriage built on love, sacrifice, and service. After settling in Hopkinsville, Kentucky, where Darrel opened his medical practice, Sheila pursued a career as a registered nurse, devoting herself to the care of her patients throughout her professional life. During her nursing career, she served at Jennie Stuart Medical Center in Hopkinsville, and later at the University of Alabama Medical Center in Birmingham, Alabama, where she earned the respect of colleagues and patients alike. Together, Sheila and Darrel’s greatest joy was raising their three sons; Derrick, Brian, and Gavin. Widowed far too soon, Sheila was left with the enormous responsibility of raising three young boys on her own. She met that challenge head on. A no-nonsense woman with a strong work ethic, she dedicated herself to providing for her family and ensuring her sons had every opportunity to succeed. While her boys occasionally tested limits and created their share of mischief, they could do no wrong in their mother’s eyes. Her love was unconditional, and she never stopped believing in them. In time, they each grew into men who made her proud. Sheila approached life with enthusiasm and commitment. Whatever she chose to do, she was all in. When her sons became competitive swimmers, she immersed herself in the sport alongside them, eventually rising through the ranks of the United States swimming community as an active volunteer and supporter. She was deeply invested in the success of her children and gave generously of her time wherever she felt she could make a difference. At home, Sheila took delight in a variety of creative pursuits. She loved gardening and took pride in cultivating beautiful plants and flowers. Her talents extended to knitting, basket weaving, and countless other projects that allowed her creativity to flourish. Whether caring for her family, pursuing a hobby, or helping others, Sheila brought energy, determination, and wholehearted dedication to everything she did. Of all her accomplishments, nothing brought Sheila more pleasure than her family. She took immense pride in watching her family grow through the generations and treasured every opportunity to spend time with those she loved. Sheila was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Darrel Estle Rains; her son, Gavin Andrew Rains, and her parents, Kenneth Leroy Truesdale and Dorothy Rausch Truesdale. She is survived by her son, Derrick, and his wife, Tina, and their sons, Darrel and Deacon; her son, Brian, and his wife Amy, and their daughter, Audrey; as well as Tallulah and Ayla, daughters of her late son, Gavin. Of course, she had many extended family members, dear friends, and countless others whose lives were touched by her spirited wit. Her life was defined by the hardships she endured, but by the courage and grace with which she faced Them. Though she will be deeply missed, the values she instilled, the sacrifices she made, and the love she gave so freely will remain forever in the hearts of those who knew and loved her. Memorial services will be held at 12:00 p.m. Saturday, June 27, 2026, at Hughart, Beard & Giles Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Riverside Cemetery. Visitation will be Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until the service hour. Hughart, Beard & Giles Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. |
