| About | Shirley E. Smith, 71, of Zanesville, died early Monday morning, August 3, 2009 at her home. She was born on December 4, 1937 in Zanesville. Shirley graduated from Zanesville High School in 1955. She received her undergraduate degree from Ohio University. She obtained her Master's Degree from Ohio University. She taught Deaf Education in the Zanesville City Schools, taught at South Zanesville Elementary School and continued her education career as Professor of Education at Muskingum College where she retired and where she was also actively involved in establishing the graduate program. She was a 24 year (six term) member of the Maysville School Board. She was a member of the Child Conservation League, member of Rolling Plains United Methodist Church. She also owned and operated an assisted living facility known as Westhaven Eldercare from 1983 until 2006. She is survived by her four children, Randall J. Smith of Zanesville, Danielle Smith of Zanesville, Eric C. (Brooke) Smith of Zanesville, and Michelle L. (Jeff) Starkey of Delaware, OH; two sisters, Betty Cullison of Newark and Carol Hill of Cambridge; one brother, Ronald "Buck" Holdren of Zanesville. She was preceded in death by her mother, Thelma Dickerson; step-father, Ed Dickerson; and her husband, Ron Smith. Friends may call from 2-4 & 6-8 p.m. Friday, August 7, 2009 at William Thompson & Son Funeral Home, 5765 Gladstone Dr., White Cottage. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, August 8, 2009 at the funeral home with Rev. Paul Ashbrook officiating. Burial will be in Zanesville Memorial Park. Memorial contributions may be made to Rolling Plains United Methodist Church. |
