| About | Stanley Gordon Briggs, 84, entered God’s eternal kingdom, surrounded by his loving family, on Tuesday, March 18th, at 9:35 PM at the Morrison House of Genesis Hospice & Palliative Care, following a courageous 15 year battle with Parkinson’s disease. He was born February 12, 1930, in Zanesville, the son of the late Forrest and Pearl (Martin) Briggs. Surviving is his loving wife of 56 years, Martha Jane (Soller) Briggs, who he married at St. Nicholas Catholic Church on Oct. 19, 1957; 5 children, Douglas (Ann) Briggs, Gary Briggs, Kerry (John) Lear, Beth (Bill) Gehlken & Brian (Erin) Briggs; 6 grandchildren, Kaeli Lear, Megan Lear, Morgan Briggs, Makayla Briggs, Alana Gehlken, Aaron Gehlken; 1 step-grandson, Mason Maxwell; 2 sisters, Virginia Landman and Marilyn Seymour and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a brother, John Briggs . Growing up on the family farm north of Zanesville, which included the Briggs Airport, Stan developed a love of airplanes and flying, earning his pilot’s license at the age of 16. Stan graduated Lash High School in 1948 and was a Navy veteran serving in Newfoundland, the Island of Malta, and Jacksonville Naval Air Station from 1951-1955. After leaving the service, Stan returned to work at Mock Woodworking, further increasing his love of cabinetry. He was a skilled cabinet maker, building many custom cabinets throughout Muskingum County, with big band music playing in the background. Stan was a member of the Ohio Carpenter’s Union Locals 200 & 267, retiring from C.W. Taylor & Sons Construction and Paul Contracting. Stan was a member of the Dresden American Legion Post 399 and the Dresden VFW Post 11072 and was the Grand Marshal of the Dresden Homecoming Parade in 2004. He was a member of St. Nicholas Catholic Church where he ushered for many years. Stan was actively involved in his childrens’ and grandchildrens’ lives, always had a smile on his face, and was well-liked by all who knew him. Burial will be at Mt. Olive Cemetery. |
