About Dr. Stephen D. Rostek, 63, of Zanesville, died at his home on Tuesday morning, March 22, 2011.

He was born September 19, 1947, in Zanesville, the son of the late John P. and Norma V. Howard Rostek. He was a retired educator from MATC/ Zane State College. He earned a bachelor's degree in mathematics, a master's degree in education, and a Ph.D. all from Ohio University, Athens.

Dr. Rostek was hired September 19, 1969, as Instructor in the Vocational-Technical Center teaching mathematics and physics. He held the position of Instructor in the Engineering and Science divison from 1971 through April 1978, when he was promoted to Assistant Professor. He was promoted to Associate Professor in 1981, to Assistant Academic Dean in 1986, and to the Dean of the Engineering and Science Division in June 1987. He held the position of Dean for Engineering, Natural Science, Business and Information Technologies at the time of his retirement on June 30, 2004.

After retirement, Dr. Rostek completed special projects for the College in relation to the AQIP projects and articulation agreements from 2007-2009. Dr. Rostek was awarded the Outstanding Administrator of the Year Award in 1989 and again in 2003. He was also the recipient of the 2005 Zane State College Honorary Associate Degree (Associate of Public Service).

Dr. Rostek was not only a long-standing employee who always promoted Muskingum Area Technical College/ Zane State College in the community, he was also a friend to so many of his associates. He will be truly missed.

Steve was a member of the Zanesville Country Club, Genesis Fitness Center and had attended St. Nicholas Catholic Church, and also churches of other denominations.

Steve was an educator, brother, uncle, godfather, and friend. He enjoyed caring for his home, helping his family and friends, golfing, tennis, racquetball, handball, excercising, reading, and sports, classic programs, and old cartoons on television. He was the "handyman of the family" and a helper to anyone needing his skilled talents.

He is survived by his sister, Judith A. (William) Miller, New Concord; brother, John A. (Sandra) Rostek, Massillon; nieces, Kristen Ann Balala, Massillon, Kathryn Lynne Miller, New Concord; aunt, Doris Jenkins, Zanesville; cousins, Charles (Sally) Jalbrzikowski, Michael (Becky) Jalbrzikowski, Jeffrey Jalbrzikowski, Jeffrey Jenkins, Howard (Karen) Jenkins, Brenda (Gary) Allen, Gale (Norene) Jenkins, Cindy Monnett, Paula (Bob) Lacy, MaryAnn Kimble, Michelle (Jim) Hubbard; and great nephews, Anthony "Tony" Balala and Derek Shanklin.

He was preceded in death by his parents; aunt, Helen Rostek who helped raise him; aunts and uncles, Agnes (Charles) Jalbrzikowski, Mike (Pauline) Rostek, Gale (Edenna) Howard, Thane Jenkins; nephew, Derek John Rostek; and cousins, Mary Jalbrzikowski Anshutz, and Lori Jenkins Colebank.

Friends may call Friday, March 25, from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at the Bryan & Snider Funeral Home, 2318 Maple Avenue, Zanesville. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 26, at Bryan & Snider Funeral Home, with Reverend Steve Sullivan officiating.

Stephen had requested cremation following the services, with burial by his parents in Mount Olive Cemetery, Zaneville.
