David S. "Dave" Barrell

Age 58, of Hockessin, DE, died on Saturday, November 5, 2011 following a fourteen-month battle with cancer. Dave was born in Wilmington, DE on May 15, 1953 and grew up in Lawton, OK. He was the son of Elizabeth Adams and the late Edgar Alden Barrell, III. After graduating from the University of Delaware in 1979 with a BS in Accounting and Finance, Dave accepted a position with Arthur Anderson & Co. in Baltimore, MD. He earned his CPA shortly thereafter and in 1981 moved to Wilmington, DE to join the finance department of Wilmington Trust. In 1985 Dave moved to Manufacturers Hanover, which eventually became JPMorgan Chase. For the past 18 years, he served as Vice President and Controller of the Chase Insurance Group.

Always active and young at heart, Dave enjoyed all types of sports, especially golf, and in 2000 earned a first-degree black belt in martial arts. He was a man of faith and a devoted husband and father whose wonderful sense of humor was evident even in the final days of his life.

He is survived by his wife of 29 years, Linda Johnson Barrell, and his four children, Jillian Barrell, a professional ballet dancer with Ballet Arizona in Phoenix, AZ, Nicholas Barrell, a student at the University of DE, Kelsey Barrell, a student at Towson University, and Ryan Barrell, who lives at home. He is also survived by his mother, Elizabeth Adams of Ridgeland, SC, and five sisters, Samantha Weidenmaier and Anne Vazquez of Lawton, OK, Susan Powell of Nobleboro, Maine, Kathy Hite of Carlisle, PA, and Lori Amy of Ridgeland, SC.

Visitation will be held at 10 am on Saturday, November 12 at Willowdale Chapel, 675 Unionville Road, Kennett Square, PA 19348, followed by a celebration of his life at 11:30 am.
