My cousin James "Butch" Wright was raised in Purcell. James was an active school band member playing the saxophone and served as drum major of the PHS Marching Band. James was also a three year All State Choir receipenant and President of the Spanish Club his junior and senior year. Upon PHS graduation he entered the University of Oklahoma and became a member of the OU Pride marching band where he became the "first black drum major in OU history". He was especially proud of being an OU drum major for himself, his family and friends in Purcell and for the university. James was an excellent bass singer and after graduating from OU traveled extensively throughout the US and internationally, while serving on the staff of various churches, and as a vocal recording artist. James sang before the Queen of England, and also performed in the Broadway production of Porgy and Bess. Before his passing he had created a Christmas CD album. James has one daughter in Nashville, Tenn. |
