About | RHODES BETTY THATCHER Betty Jane (nee' Thatcher) Rhodes, a resident of West Orange, NJ, former resident of Morristown, NJ, and native of Pittsburgh, PA, died on December 4, 2010, in West Orange, NJ. She was 90 years old. Mrs. Rhodes is survived by her daughter, the Rev. Diane Lynn Rhodes, Pastor and Priest-in-Charge of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church in Harrington Park, NJ, by two grandsons, Michael (and Kelly) Rhodes of Shippensburg, PA and William (and Cindy) Rhodes of the Netherlands, and by four great-grandchildren. She was pre-deceased by her husband, George F. Rhodes (1953) and by her son, George F. Rhodes II (2001). A graduate of Carrick High School in Pittsburgh, Mrs. Rhodes earned her undergraduate degree from the University of Pittsburgh, where she was a elected to Delta Zeta and Delta Delta Lambda; she earned a Master of Education degree from Duquesne University in Pittsburgh. During her lifetime, Mrs. Rhodes was a member of Carrick (Pittsburgh) Chapter #231, OES, and also was a member of the Washington Association of New Jersey and the Woman's Club of Morristown, NJ. A dedicated high school teacher for more than thirty years, Mrs. Rhodes taught at Carrick High School for twenty three years, and served as Chair of the Business Education department. She was a Critic Teacher for Duquesne University's Business Education department and a Supervising Instructor for the Pennsylvania Civil Service Commission in Pittsburgh. She also served as faculty advisor to the Carrick High School Tri-Hi-Y service organization for more than ten years. She continued to receive letters of thanks from her former students for many years after her retirement in 1980. Mrs. Rhodes moved to Morristown, NJ in 1983. She was a member of St. Peter's Episcopal Church, where she served as a volunteer receptionist and was a member of the Friendly Guild organization. She was also a member of Morristown's Retired Senior Volunteer Program. Mrs. Rhodes moved to West Orange, NJ in 1990, and resided at the Canterbury Village Assisted Living facility until her death. Arrangements are by the ANTHONY R. PIZZI FUNERAL HOME, 120 Paris Avenue, Northvale, NJ; friends may visit on Tuesday, December 7 from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. A Service of Holy Eucharist in celebration of her life will be held at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, Harrington Park, NJ on Wednesday, December 8, at 10:00 a.m. Her ashes will be interred in the Memorial Garden at St. Peter's Episcopal Church, Morristown. In lieu of flowers, contributions to St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, Harrington Park, NJ or St. Peter's Episcopal Church, Morristown, NJ, would be gratefully received.
