About | Gwen Hays, age 74, died peacefully in her sleep early on Wednesday, November 1, 2017. Gwen was born on February 13, 1943 in Malone, NY. She graduated from high school in Coudersport, PA in 1960. At the University of Pittsburgh she was the first ever female in the engineering school with 1500 men. She received a BS degree in Electrical Engineering in 1964. She worked for NSA for two years then for Westinghouse Defense Center (later Northrop Grumman) for 35 years. Attending night school, she obtained an MBA degree from Loyola University Maryland in 1976. She was a past President of the Baltimore-Washington Section of the Society of Women Engineers. At Westinghouse Gwen became their best Program Manager. The oral history of her professional career can be found online at %u201CIEEE Gwen Hays.%u201D After retiring in 2001, Gwen and her husband raised llamas in Rappahannock County, VA. They retired from farming in 2011 and settled in Luray, VA where she lived until she died. Gwen suffered from four rounds of breast cancer, painful arthritis in her knees, a painful knee replacement, and life-long depression. Gwen is survived by her husband, Clyde Humphrey. In keeping with Gwen%u2019s express desires, there will not be a memorial service. She will be cremated and her ashes returned to nature.
