About | Judith C. Hill, 85, of Harrisburg, peacefully entered eternal life Tuesday, April 8, 2014, while at the Carolyn Croxton Slane Hospice Residence. She was born May 14, 1928 in Harrisburg to the late James W. Fountain Sr. and Judith M. Fountain. She received her formal education in the Harrisburg School District graduating from William Penn High School, Class of 1946. She received her undergraduate degree in Elementary Education at Virginia Union University and pursued graduate courses in Advanced Education at Tuskegee University and other institutions of higher education. Ms. Hill was a teacher involved with training and teaching throughout the United States, Canada and worldwide. A lifelong member of Mitchell Memorial Church, she continued her support and membership at Camp Curtin Memorial-Mitchell UMC. She served as Lay Leader, Trustee Board Member as well as with the Church Council of Ministries and the local United Methodist Women. Ms. Hill chaired numerous committees and received countless awards and recognitions which include: Harrisburg's First African American City Councilwoman; Presidential appointment, Staff Assistant to Director of Civil Rights, U.S. Department of Transportation under Drew Lewis; Dean of Students, Harrisburg High School; Director, Women's Division, General Board of Global Ministries; President, Church Women United; Counselor, Lead Instructor for O.I.C.; Chairman, Commission on Religion in Appalachia; former member of Harrisburg School Board; and Board Chairman, Camp Curtin YMCA. Her other professional affiliations and memberships included Urban League, NAACP, ZONTA International, Who's Who, American Colleges and Universities, Board member, Neighborhood Center and Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. In addition to her parents, Ms. Hill was preceded in death by 2 siblings, James W. Fountain II and Majorie Fountain; brothers-in-law, Wilbur Fordham and William Mays. She is survived by 1 son, Jeffrey M. Hill of Harrisburg; 1 daughter, Judith Michelle Hill of NY, NY; granddaughter, Ashleigh M. Hill of Hampton, VA; 2 sisters, Georgia Mays and Jessie Fordham, both of Harrisburg; other relatives and friends. |
