Car accident claims Julie Weaver Branthoover and her, two children

Three members of a family were killed Sunday at 3 p.m., after someone collided with their Plymouth Voyager near Nanty Glo, PA.

Brian and Julie Branthoover, daughter Hailee, 3, and son Ian, 22 months, were on their way back to Bristow, VA after a weekend retreat at the family's home in Indiana, Pa.

Julie, 38, and Hailee were pronounced dead on the scene. Ian and his father were both flown by MedStar helicopter to Memorial Medical Center in Johnstown, where Ian was pronounced dead. Julie Branthoover died of neck injuries; the children both suffered head trauma, Denny Kwiatkowski, Cambria County Coroner said Monday. Brian Branthoover suffered back and neck injuries; he remains in fair condition at Memorial Medical Center.

The name of the driver of the Ford Bronco that hit the Voyager was not available Monday. That person suffered a fractured pelvis, Kwiatkowski said.

The family was eastbound on U.S. 422 when the Bronco broadsided it at the intersection with Cardiff Road, Kwiatkowski said. The Bronco's driver was headed north on Cardiff, according to authorities.

After the initial collision, the van flipped onto its side, crossed the road and sheared the surface off of a utility pole. The whole family was wearing seat belts.

"This was a tough one," Kwiatkowski told the Johnstown Tribune-Democrat.

Speed is a possible factor in the accident, Kwiatkowski said.

"We're going to have to wait for the reconstructioner's report to come back," he said.

U.S. 422 is a two-lane highway with a 55 mph speed limit, Kwiatkowski said. Cardiff Road comes out of a town about five miles south of the intersection. There is a long straightaway before the intersection, which "kind of sneaks up on you a little," Kwiatkowski said.
